Pond Pics Winter 2007

Thank you for visiting. These are pics of my pond idling in winter of 2007. You can see the little oasis that I built primarily for my 2 Snapping turtles (serpentina serpentina) who are now 2 years old and hibernating for their first time. Since the Maccourt ponds are only 18 inches deep the turtles are hibernating in the basement. As long as it says below 50°F then their bodies will not require nourishment.

Don't be fooled by their drunken like sleepy state as they can snap out of it quickly and run.

It's 20°F today and the water is still flowing. The waterfall is not freezing at all. Why? There is a submersible heater in the lower pond right at the Pondmaster 2950 filter that is used as a prefilter. This way the waterfall cannot freeze again and spill water outside the pond. The lower pond was emptied pretty well and the pump was starving for water before I moved the heater and made a splashguard for the filter falls. Good thing it was very cold or the pump would have melted. You can see just a few plants that break the surface. All of them are in the deepest parts of the ponds. Whichever ones survive are the ones that I will get more of this Spring. The reflectors are there to just show where the fence is when the snow becomes too deep or the drifts too tall. I hope you enjoy zooming in by clicking and taking a break from your busy day.
